EXAMPLES OF OUR RECENT WORK
Petroleum Engineering - We recently recommended a business strategy for applying EOR within a large oil and gas producing company. Our recommendations included a process for selecting which EOR processes to focus on, how EOR projects should be managed and what kind and level of laboratory facilities were needed. The EOR management process was based on our SPE paper 92006 presented in Puebla, Mexico, in 2004.
Much of our work has been with litigation attorneys serving as expert consultants or expert witnesses. There are several recent examples:
A recent example was a dispute between the IRS and a major oil & gas property owner concerning the value of oil & gas exploration acreage. We conducted an independent evaluation of the acreage to establish the value as of a certain date. We also evaluated the other expert reports on both sides to advise on weaknesses and strengths. The case was settled to the satisfaction of the client.
In another case, we carefully reviewed prior work, done both in-house and by other consultants, to confirm their reliability and, in some cases, to identify weaknesses and errors. The advice we provided was instrumental in helping attorneys fashion their cross examination strategies. A judgment on this case is currently pending.
When a group of royalty owners sued a major producer alleging that they had mismanaged the oil & gas reservoir by failing to utilize enhanced oil recovery processes at the appropriate time, the litigation team asked for our help. We conducted a detailed study of the history of this Texas oil field and concluded that the operator had done everything that was economically feasible to maximize recovery from this property. With our help the attorney’s won this case in court. The plaintiffs were awarded zero damages and were ordered to pay defendants court cost.
To help sales people understand their market better, we organized a one day class on how the oil and gas industry works. This was followed with a tour of exhibitors at the SPE Annual Conference and Exhibit to demonstrate the technology being marketed there. The result was a much improved understanding of the industry they were selling to.
Digital Engineering - We are currently coaching a client on how to introduce a new software product into the upstream oil & gas industry. The software focuses on enabling operators to use real time data to improve surveillance of reservoirs and facilities. Our role is to provide industry expertise on how to approach their clients and on how to best meet the client’s needs. Our broad background in operations and engineering helps focus them in the right directions.
Due Diligence for Investors - We have recently been contracted by an investment firm to perform due diligence on a segment in the oilfield services arena. We were contracted based on our expertise and operational background in the specific area of interest. As a result, we recommended numerous opportunities for operational and financial improvement within the targeted companies. As well as synergies between the various companies for added value post acquisition. Additionally, and most importantly, we provided a deep level of understanding regarding the client base and the operating environment they worked in. This entailed deep analysis into company data and “face to face” interaction with executive leadership of the perspective businesses.
An investor from outside the industry was interested in making a sizable investment in oil shale. They asked us to provide the technical due diligence needed to confirm the viability of the process and of value of the property. We did so in a short period of time by interviewing the owners of the technology, offering an opinion on their competency and on the viability of their plans.
Strategic Planning - We are currently working with a service company to do a survey of producers in a selected basin on fracturing practices and results. By interviewing a number of operators, we are gathering operational parameters and performance results for a large number of wells. By comparing the performance with operational parameters, we will advise operators on best practices within their region. The final report should be of great value to all involved.
A start-up company needed advice on where to focus their attention to apply their new technology. We survey available information and provided a list of reservoirs that could benefit most from their innovation.
Customer advisory councils are a great way to improve relations with the people who buy your products. Working with a large manufacturer we have organized and facilitated a group of customers to provide feedback and advice in a very focused and direct way.
